Advanced First Aid (formerly known as OFA L3)

General Information

Advanced First Aid (formerly known as OFA L3) is a 70 hour program designed to provide the first aid attendant with the skills to function as part of an effective first aid program in the work place.

The course consists of Lessons involving a minimum of 70 hours of classroom study and practice. Pre-reading for each lesson is essential. Lectures will cover those areas essential for learning emergency care, but the need for pre-reading and continual review is essential for the understanding of first aid subjects covered in each lesson.

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age and be able to understand and perform the first aid skills required to complete the learning tasks. No previous first aid training is required. This means you do not need to take Basic First Aid (OFA L1) or Intermediate First Aid (OFA L2) prior to taking this course.

Intention

Course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:
Workplace compliance with the Occupational First Aid Regulation
Effective interaction between attendants, employers and workers
Efficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the BC Ambulance Service and hospital emergency personnel

General Information

Basic First Aid (formerly known as OFA L1) is a 7 hour program (8 hour day with normal breaks) designed to provide life saving first aid skills to workers in industry.

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age and be able to understand and perform the first aid skills required to complete the learning tasks. No previous first aid training is required.

Certification is valid for three years from the date of completion of the Basic First Aid training course.
To renew a Basic First Aid (formerly known as OFA L1) a candidate must successfully retake the Level 1 course. There is no more the option of going through a recert class.

Intention

Course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:
- Workplace compliance with the Occupational First Aid Regulation
- Effective interaction between attendants, employers and workers
- Efficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the Level 3 Occupational First Aid Attendant, BC Ambulance Service and hospital emergency personnel

Certification

Upon successful completion of this interactive course and successfully writing a written 25 question multiple choice exam, candidates will receive a WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid certificate. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

EMA_Candidate_Examination_Handbook

This practice session is intended for those that want to freshen up on their skills and anyone that is getting ready for their BC EMA EMR Licensing exam.

There will be skills stations for sagar splint, rolls and scenarios will include both trauma and medical calls which includes a review of pharmacology.

To make sure we can take as much out of this practice as possible, we would require everyone to be on time. Please have your materials reviewed before coming to this practice session.

BC EMA Licensees - How to obtain an OFA ticket

First responders working as designated first aid attendants

Emergency Medical Assistant (EMA) licence-holders working as designated first aid attendants

If you are a paramedic, emergency medical responder, or other first responder with a current EMA licence issued by the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board of B.C. (EMALB), you can have your licence recognized as an alternative qualification at the following levels:

• First Responder (EMA FR) — intermediate first aid
• Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) — advanced first aid
• Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) — advanced first aid
• Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) — advanced first aid
• Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) — advanced first aid

EMA licence-holders no longer need to apply for equivalent certificates through a training provider.

Employers must ensure that EMA licence-holders understand their responsibilities and operational limitations as occupational first aid attendants. For details, see OHS guideline G3.15-3.

Paramedics with a licence from another Canadian jurisdiction

If you are a paramedic or other first responder with a current licence from another Canadian jurisdiction, you are eligible for first aid certification in B.C. You will need to apply for and acquire an out-of-jurisdiction Emergency Medical Assistant (EMA) licence at the appropriate level from the EMALB, then complete an application for certification and a jurisprudence package. Bring the completed jurisprudence package to an approved training provider and present your valid EMALB-issued license and current government-issued photo ID. The approved first aid training provider will provide the application for certification and issue a certificate at the appropriate level.

The best way to minimize an encounter with a bear is by practising prevention.

Don’t wait until you are head-to-head with a bear to think about what you could have done to avoid an encounter. Bear Aware: Travelling in Bear Country provides general knowledge about bears, their habits, and behaviours.

It will also discuss some ways to help prevent bear encounters, as well as what you need to do to increase your chances of survival should a bear encounter or attack happen.

This course is designed for anyone travelling or camping through bear country.

Completion: At the end of the module, there is a test. Participants that do not achieve 100% can review the module content and try as many times as necessary to complete the course.

Certification: Upon successfully completing the module, there is a printable certificate for your records.

Bears are fascinating creatures that are generally quite peaceful, but they are also powerful carnivores capable of doing great damage to property as well as human beings and should be treated with respect. This course covers general bear facts as well as discussing safety procedures for personnel working in the field, and the proper procedures for setting up and maintaining a safe camp.

This course is designed for anyone working in bear country.

Course length online is about 2-3 hrs.

Motorcycling remains very popular for nearly 1 million Canadians, both as a passion and as a mode of transportation. During the pandemic there was a dramatic increase in the sales volume of motorcycles. Unfortunately, there has also been an increase in the number of rider injuries and fatalities. Biker Down’s mission is to train and empower bikers to help reduce motorcyclist fatalities by 30 per cent; not only saving lives but also eliminating the associated costs of a road traffic fatality.

Biker Down consists of three key training modules taught in a three hour session. Module 1 teaches a rider how to manage an accident scene safely and effectively. Module 2 is exclusive first aid training for Biker Down students, provided by Canadian Red Cross First Aid Trainers which will include learning proper helmet removal techniques. Module 3 delivers some proactive conspicuity strategies with a focus on the science behind why motorcyclists are often not seen by other road users.

Duration:

Pre-course preparation

Having CPR-BLS, when entering into the Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder Program would really be very helpful, but not necessary to enter into the program.
Once registered a Dropbox link will be provided via email with access to study materials.

Licensing

Learners who have completed the EMR Program and have certified must license with the Emergency Medical Association Licensing Board in order to work as an EMR in BC. Costs for the EMA EMR exam are approximately $450.
Learners have one year after their EMR class completion date to pass their licensing exams.  Learners who miss the one year deadline to license and who completed the EMR Program within three years must complete the EMR Renewal course before re-applying for licensure.

When registered and paid for the course, we will send the student a link for the electronic book, which can be printed if wanted or brought to class on a tablet, those that take the full EMR course will be getting the Red Cross Professional Responder book. No one expects a fire, emergency or other disaster to occur in their workplace. It is important to remember that these misfortunes can strike anyone, anytime, and in any workplace. Fires in the workplace cause extensive injury and property loss. If a fire started in your home or workplace would you know what to do?

Fire Safety teaches participants about the legislated fire safety responsibilities of the employer and the worker, describes safe work practices related to fire prevention, and provides practical information about emergency response in situations involving fire.

Course Duration:

This online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at anytime and can resume where they left off. The duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge of the subject matter. On average, the timeline for completion will be 1 - 2 hours.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

• Explain how the issue of fire safety is addressed by occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation in Canada and identify the fire safety responsibilities of employers and those of workers
• Describe safe work practices that can reduce the risk of fire
• Know what to do in the event of a fire
• Recognize fire-related situations in which the use of a fire extinguisher is appropriate and situations in which it is best to evacuate rather than try to put out the fire
• Identify the types of extinguishers, and the classes of fire that can be put out using each type of extinguisher
• Know how to use a fire extinguisher
• Understand the maintenance and servicing requirements related to fire extinguishers

Evaluation Process:

Fire Safety is a 4-module course. At the end of each module, there is a test. Participants must successfully complete the test before continuing to the next module. Participants that do not achieve 100% can review the module content and try as many times as necessary to advance and complete the course. Test questions are randomly selected from a test bank, making each test unique. Upon successfully completing all modules, there is a printable certificate for your records.

General Information

The Level 1 course is for food service front-line workers such as buspersons, servers, dishwashers, and cooks. Level 1 is usually delivered in a one day format (8 hours). If you take this course in British Columbia and pass the final exam, you will be registered in the BC Centre for Disease Control database and you will receive a FOODSAFE certificate.

• create awareness of foodborne illness and worker safety.
• to reduce the possibility of food related illness.
• share the importance of safe work habits in the food industry.
  

  Food Safety

Who should take this course?

The BC Health Act: Food Premises Regulation, Part 3, Division 2 - Training, Foodsafe Training 10 states that:

1) Every operator of a food service establishment must hold a certificate, issued by a health official, for the successful completion of the food handler training program known as FOODSAFE or its equivalent.

2) Every operator of a food service establishment must ensure that, while the operator is absent from the food service establishment, at least one employee present in the establishment holds the certificate referred to in subsection (1).

This means that it is not required by the BC regulation that you have a FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate, in order to work as a server. However, some employers require that all their employees have a Level 1 certificate. Also, it is an advantage to have your certificate when applying for jobs.

The FOODSAFE Level 1 course is about preventing the transmission of foodborne illness. FoodSafe is also about worker safety on the job. People who prepare, serve and clean up food should take this course. It will be for the safety of the customers and also for their own safety.

To add to your training, Basic First Aid (WorkSafeBC) would be highly recommended.

Hazard Identification and Control

Hazard identification and control helps to identify and analyze workplace hazards in order to reduce the risk of injury or illness on the job. This course will provide the knowledge and tools for hazard recognition, risk assessments, and control methods. All companies, regardless of size or industry, must understand hazard identification and control, along with workplace inspections, to meet safety requirements in BC.

Many incidents are preventable, as long as you take a proactive approach to health and safety. By putting in place a system to identify hazards and manage risks, you can prevent workplace injuries and diseases. There are three basic steps:

1. Identify hazards — Consider every area of your workplace when looking for hazards. Think about conditions or work activities that could put your workers or guests at risk (e.g., unguarded machinery, a wet floor). Ask your staff if they have any specific health and safety concerns.
2. Assess the risks — Once you’ve identified a hazard, evaluate the risks associated with it. There are two basic questions to ask when considering a hazard: how likely is an incident, and how serious would it be if it occurred? A risk assessment will help you prioritize the hazards so you know which ones to deal with first.
3. Control the risks — Once you’ve identified the hazards and assessed the risks, look for ways to control them. The basic types of controls are elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment.

Objectives:

Incidents requiring an investigation

Employers are responsible for immediately conducting an investigation into any incident that involves:

Serious injury to a worker or a worker's death.
Injury requiring medical treatment.
Minor injury, or no injury, but had the potential for causing serious injury.
Major structural failure or collapse.
Major release of hazardous substances.
Diving incident, as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation.
Dangerous incident involving explosive materials.
Blasting incident causing personal injury.

Section 173 of the Workers Compensation Act provides more details about what incidents employers must investigate.

Investigation stages

Conducting an investigation into an incident that occurred in your workplace includes four stages. Those conducting the investigation must be knowledgeable about the type of work involved at the time of the incident. An employer and a worker representative must participate, if or as they are available.

This is a 24 hr formal Occupational First Aid Level 1 Instructor training program. The Instructor School will follow the new 2018 curriculum.

There will be a 2 day Train the Trainer Program (Fundamentals of Instruction - Red Cross certified). After successful completion of the Train the Trainer Program, there will be a 2 day WorkSafeBC OFA L1 Instructor School Program.

A maximum of 8 students are allowed in the Program.

Prerequisites OFA L1 Instructor

• Be at least 19 years of age prior to instructor training
• Hold a current/valid Standard First Aid certificate or higher (preferred OFA L2 or L3)

Intermediate first aid is a 14-hour program (excluding breaks) designed to provide lifesaving first aid skills to workers in industry.

Prerequisites
Candidates must be able to understand and perform the first aid skills required to complete the learning tasks. No previous first aid training is required.

Certification
To qualify for intermediate certification the candidate must participate in a minimum of 14 hours of training and successfully complete the course objectives as taught and evaluated by a person
authorized by the Workers’ Compensation Board (WorkSafeBC). Certification is valid for three years from the date of completion of the intermediate training course.
To renew an intermediate certificate, a candidate must successfully retake the first aid course.

Intention
Instructors and course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:
•Workplace compliance with the first aid regulation
•Effective interaction between employers, supervisors, workers, and attendants
•Efficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the advanced first aid attendant, BC Ambulance Service, and hospital emergency personnel

Practical skills
Failure of successfully demonstrate a practical skill for the intermediate first aid course may be remediated at Be Prepared  The practical skill remediation, must be completed after the written examination on the day of the course.

Written
Candidates may attempt a second examination no sooner than 24 hours after the first failed examination.
Candidates who choose not to attempt a second examination within 60 days of the first examination will be required to repeat the entire course of instruction prior to being eligible for another examination.
Should the second examination also result in failure, the candidate must undergo a full course of instruction to be eligible for another examination.

The Workers Compensation Act requires employers to establish a Joint Health and Safety Committee, that regularly employs 20 or more (full or part-time) employees.

Many workplaces find that joint worker/employer safety and health committees are an excellent means of consultation within the organisation. These committees can help identify workplace health and safety responsibilities. They can establish positive attitudes, and assist the employer in reducing and or eliminating workplace injuries or diseases.

What joint committees and worker health and safety representatives do

The joint committee plays an important role in your occupational health and safety program, giving workers and employers a way to work together to identify and find solutions to workplace health and safety issues. The joint committee has the following specific duties and functions:

• Identify situations that may be unhealthy or unsafe for workers, and advise on effective systems for responding to those situations
• Consider, and promptly deal with complaints relating to the health and safety of workers
• Consult with workers and the employer on issues related to occupational health and safety, and the occupational environment
• Make recommendations to the employer and the workers for the improvement of the occupational health and safety, and the occupational environment of workers
• Make recommendations to the employer on educational programs promoting the health and safety of workers. Compliance with Part 3 of the Workers Compensation Act and the regulations, and to monitor their effectiveness
• Advise the employer on programs and policies required under the regulations for the workplace, and to monitor their effectiveness
• Advise the employer on proposed changes to the workplace. This is including significant proposed changes to equipment and machinery, or the work processes that may affect the health or safety of workers
• Ensure that accident investigations and regular inspections are carried out as required
• Participate in inspections, investigations and inquiries as provided in Part 3 of the Workers Compensation Act and Section 3 of the Regulation

In workplaces where a worker health and safety representative is required, the representative has the same duties and functions as a joint committee, to the extent practicable.

This program is typically scheduled for 8 hrs.

What is lockout?
Lockout is the use of locks to prevent machinery or equipment from being started accidentally when maintenance work is being done.
Why is lockout important?
Every year, workers are seriously injured because machinery or equipment was not properly locked out.
This means crushed limbs, severed fingers, even death.
If you work on machinery or equipment that requires lockout, you must follow written safe work procedures.
Take the time to follow these procedures; they will protect you from injuries that will affect you and your
family.

There will be a quiz at the end of the course.

After successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

The term "Lockout/Tagout" refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard workers from the unexpected energizing or start-up of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities. Lockout/Tagout explains the importance of Lockout/Tagout in protecting the health and safety of workers. The course examines basic workplace safety tenets and examines the specific stages and procedures of the Lockout/Tagout process. The basic tenets of safety are explained as are the specific stages and procedures of the Lockout-Tagout process.

Duration

This online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at anytime and can resume where they left off. The duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge of the subject matter. On average, the course will take between 1.5 - 3 hours to complete.

Learning Objectives:

Ultimately, the goal of this course is to educate participants as to what a lockout device is and when Lockout-Tagout should be used in the work place. The course examines basic workplace safety tenets and examines the specific stages and procedures of the Lockout-Tagout process.

This course is presented in 4 modules:

• Introduction
• Injury Prevention
• Equipment Shutdown and Isolation
• The Procedure of Lockout - Tagout

Evaluation Process:

At the end of each module, there is a test. Participants that do not achieve 100% can review the module content and try as many times as necessary to complete the course. Test questions are randomly selected from a test bank, making each test unique.

Losing your ticket at any time is stressful for everyone that needs it to work as an attendant in the workplace. To help make the stress of getting a new ticket as best as possible we have put some steps together to smooth-en the process.

1. Have taken the course with Be Prepared on-site or off-site
2. Have successfully completed the course and were in possession of a valid ticket
3. Ticket is still valid at the time of request

Costs for lost your occupational first aid ticket?

Because of all the required steps and retrieving old information and adding new information to the file, the administration fee for receiving the new ticket is $45.

The Medical Terminology course provides an introduction to the professional language used by those who are directly and indirectly involved with the art of healing. Occupational First Aid Level-2 (OFA L2)

General information

This 36-hour WorkSafeBC course covers all medical techniques within the responsibility of the attendant at a workplace.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Students need to be able to understand and perform the first aid skills required to complete the learning tasks. No previous first aid training is required. This means you can take this course, and not having to take any other level of first aid.

Maximum class size is 12.

Occupational First Aid Level 2 (OFA L2) certificates are valid for three years from the date of the examination.
Extensions of the duration of certificates are not permitted, unless indicated by WorkSafeBC under special circumstances like Covid-19.

Intention

All course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:

Red Cross First Responder program is your first step in getting hired by a BC Fire Department.

Red Cross First Responder course is a 74 hour blend of independent study and instructor guided learning. The 44 hour classroom work is structured to train students to work as members of the EMS community through lecture and lab practice.

This program is recognized nationally by many other designations (Environment Canada, Fire Departments, Athletic Therapy, Canadian Coast Guard, Department of National Defence) as the entry-level program for the pre-hospital profession.
Red Cross First Responders provide a service in an environment requiring special skills, knowledge and serves as liaisons with other emergency services.

Red Cross First Responder has been approved by the B.C. Emergency Medical Attendant Licensing Board (EMALB) for First-Responder level 3 licensing (Schedule 2). This course includes CPR-BLS, AED, and Spinal Management.

Applying for an Initial First Responder Licence in British Columbia

A first responder licence is valid for three years. There are no fees required for a first responder licence.

To apply for your licence, follow these steps:

1. Successfully complete a recognized training program and the Board exams. Red Cross First Responder is recognized.
2. Once training and practical exams are complete, your evaluator submits your program certificate and course results to getanexam@gov.bc.ca.
3. Successfully complete the EMA Licensing Board online EMA FR written exam.
4. Complete and electronically submit an application for licence form.
5. Undergo a criminal record check within 12 months of the licence application

First Responder Licence Renewals (BC)

First responder licences are valid for three years and must be renewed before it expires. If your licence has expired, please refer to the EMALB - 2016-06 Reinstatement policy below. Please see the First Responder Licence Renewal FAQ for more information.

1. Successfully complete the EMA Licensing Board online EMA FR written exam.
   • A licensee has 3 attempts to successfully complete online written exam.
   • After the exam is complete, If an EMA FR did not successfully complete the online exam in the three attempts provided, the licensee must then successfully complete an EMA FR recognized training program and the Board approved exams to renew their licence.
2. Complete and electronically submit an application for licence renewal form.

Applying for an Online Examination

1. How to obtain a BCeID

• A BCeID is required to access the online exam system. If you do not already have a BCeID, click on the link and register for a Basic BCeID. Please use only lowercase characters in your BCeID username. (If you already have a BCeID and password you may skip this step.)

2. How to Request your exam

• Once you have obtained your BCeID, you need to Request Access to the exam system by logging in using your BCeID, and creating an account for the exam system.
  • To create an account, please fill out the account form on the right-hand side of the screen and submit. A request for access will then be emailed to the branch for review and a copy will be sent to you for your records.

The exam coordinator will review your information and grant you access to the exam within two weeks of the request.

***After completion of the First Responders program students can continue with the EMR Upgrade program. This will give you a better chance in getting hired by any of the local Fire Halls. If the dates would not work right away, students can come to a later date.***

With your FR License you already are recognized with WorkSafeBC and the company that needs your Intermediate First Aid WorkSafeBC certificate will now only have to have a Jurisprudence package done by you and kept on file.

General Information

This is a minimum 31 hr instructional program with comprehensive first aid and CPR techniques and scenarios for those who need a higher level of training to work and respond to emergencies in a marine setting.

Course meets the requirements of Transport Canada outlined in Transport Publication (TP) 13008 E. Designed for any person who wants to obtain a Masters or Officers certificate or endorsement, or those that are designated to provide first aid on board a vessel engaged on coastal voyage, class one or unlimited voyage. Covers advanced first aid techniques in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR/AED level BLS (formally called HCP), sudden medical emergencies, oxygen administration, and injuries to the head and/or spine.

At Be Prepared, we are scheduling this course over 40 hrs and gives you a First Responder certificate and will more then qualify you for the Marine Advanced needs. At the end of the course you can go through a licensing exam and after applying for free online at BC EMA Licensing and go through and online written exam. Once passed, you will get your FR EMA License and you have equivalency to Intermediate First Aid (WorkSafeBC)

We are only scheduling the full First Responder courses, so please follow the link below if you need your Red Cross Marine Advanced First Aid program, it is accepted by Transport Canada as it exceeds the MAFA course curriculum.

When registering for the Blended SFA, you must complete the online portion prior to coming to class to receive a certificate. You will have to re-register for another course if not completed on time. Completion from online to classroom can not be longer then 6 weeks. Without proof we have to assume its not completed.

General Information

Accident Simulation for Red Cross, WorkSafeBC trained individuals. Be Prepared provides training for Accident Simulation (European style - L.O.T.U.S.)

For Who?

Accident Simulation for Red Cross, WorkSafeBC trained individuals. Anyone that is part of a Medical Response Team, running compliance scenarios, first aid competitions.  Person(s) that organize mass casualty simulations.

Course Content

• First Aid knowledge
• Make up and use of props
• Scenario planning and safety
• Enactment of medical conditions
• Responding to treatment

Prerequisites

Current certification in any of the following programs/profession:

Advanced First Aid, First Responder, Emergency Medical Responder, Canadian Ski Patrol, Paramedic, Registered Nurse, Lifeguards (NLS/LSS). Equivalent programs will be considered as well after review of program.

Course duration

Wednesday Evening schedule to run from 6:30 PM until 9:30 PM. This will be 2.5 hrs of real practice time, for up to 40 hours class time. Start will be this Spring 2026, April 1st till end of June.

Only a small group will be allowed, to make sure enough attention is provided to any individual attending.

We can schedule this program any other time if we have enough people interested. Please use our contact form to ask what is available.

Please advise us of any allergies as a lot of different non staining, natural products will be used, including latex.

Course fee does not include all material costs, estimated extra costs around $75-$250. A small toolkit is recommended to keep all materials together. We will send out a list of recommended products to those that are interested to take the program.

General Information

Transportation Endorsement is a 7 hour program designed by WorkSafeBC and is focused on developing practical skill in patient handling techniques and patient securing procedures.

Prerequisites

To qualify for a Transportation Endorsement the candidate must be at least 16 years of age and hold a valid Basic or Intermediate certificate or equivalent.

Intention

Course participants are encouraged to assist in improving pre-hospital care of injured workers by promoting:

• Workplace compliance with the Occupational First Aid Regulation
• Effective interaction between attendants, employers and workers
• Efficient co-operation with higher levels of medical care, such as the Advanced First Aid Attendant, BC Ambulance Service and hospital emergency personnel

Certification

To qualify for certification the candidate must hold a valid Basic or Intermediate certificate or equivalent and must successfully complete a board-developed training course or its equivalent. Successful completion of course objectives will result in a transportation endorsement to the BFA/IFA certificate. The transportation endorsement is valid for three years as long as the candidate has a current Basic or Intermediate First aid certificate.

Safety Alert

This course is physically demanding. It will require prolonged kneeling, working in stooped positions, and rolling patients. Each class participant is required to function as attendant, helper and patient.

Accommodation may be made for participants that indicate a problem with some of the aforementioned activities. Participants may be permitted to adopt "comfort" positions on the floor to avoid kneeling or stooping for prolonged periods, even though the positions may not facilitate optimum patient care. However, regardless of accommodation made during the class, participants will be required to demonstrate specific skills according to an accepted standard before certification is issued.

Medical exam gloves are used during all practice sessions. Participants need to be aware of possible allergic reactions to gloves, no latex gloves are present in the classroom.

Personal Protective Equipment ("PPE") knee pads recommended to use and are provided in the classroom.

In the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) course you will learn its regulations and proper training, proper documentation, safety marks and means of containment, forbidden goods, exemptions and special provisions as well as, immediate reporting and procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.

Also Please Note: Although this is a nationally recognized course, if you are currently unemployed and seeking employment it is up to your new employer to accept any prior training. They may still require you to re-train once hired.

Duration

This online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at anytime and can resume where they left off. The duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge of the subject matter. On average, the course will take between 5 - 9 hours to complete.

Learning Objectives:

Ultimately, the goal of this course is to provide participants with the information they need to comply with the TDG Act and regulations. By completing this course, they should know how dangerous goods are classified; understand the regulations pertaining to proper documentation, safety marks, means of containment, forbidden goods, exemptions and special provisions; and know the immediate reporting and procedures to follow in the event of an emergency involving dangerous goods.

This course is presented in 9 modules:

• Safety Marks Used in Conjunction with Dangerous Goods
• Means of Containment
• Documentation
• Forbidden Goods, Exemptions and Special Provisions

Evaluation Process:

At the end of each module, there is a test. Participants that do not achieve 100% can review the module content and try as many times as necessary to complete the course. Test questions are randomly selected from a test bank, making each test unique.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System 2015

What is it?

This is a 3-4 hour program that will introduce WHMIS Education and Training for Workers. Employers must establish an education program for their workers to ensure that workers understand WHMIS and the hazards of the controlled products they work with or near. Education programs about WHMIS must be followed up with job-specific training in safe work procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of these controlled products. Workers must also be trained in emergency procedures in the event of an accident or spill.

What is covered in the course?

WHMIS 2015

The course also includes valuable practical advice, so you will know basic health and safety measures to protect yourself and prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.

WHMIS 2015 Online is based on the current 2015 legislation and meets the legislated requirement for general WHMIS training. Employers must also provide workplace-specific training and instruction for each of the hazardous products in the workplace.

WHMIS 2015 has come into effect with a transition period that lasts several years (full implementation by December 1, 2018). During this time, suppliers must fully comply with either WHMIS 2015 or with the “old” WHMIS (WHMIS 1988). This means that there may be hazardous products in the workplace that use WHMIS 2015 labels, classifications and Safety Data Sheets and there may be hazardous products that use WHMIS 1988 labels, classifications and (Material) Safety Data Sheets.

Duration

WHMIS Online is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at any time and can resume where they left off. The time required to complete the course will depend on many factors including the participant’s learning style and their prior knowledge of course material. Most participants will complete WHMIS Online in less than 2 hours.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of WHMIS 2015 (GHS) online, participants will be able to:

• Understand the essential role WHMIS plays in protecting the health and safety of Canadian workers
• Identify the WHMIS responsibilities of suppliers, employers, and workers
• Know the workplace requirements related to the use of supplier labels and workplace labels, and how to locate and interpret the information found on these labels
• Recognize the WHMIS pictograms and the types of hazard each represents
• Recognize the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) as a source of comprehensive information about a hazardous chemical in the workplace and know how to locate various types of information when reading an SDS
• Identify the WHMIS exemptions for suppliers and importers
• Know general safe work practices that should be followed when working with hazardous products

WHMIS Online is an active learning experience, using interactive content screens and online exercises to engage learners and reinforce key concepts. Mandatory testing ensures that participants have met learning objectives and retained the required knowledge.

Evaluation Process:

No participant can complete the course without verifying their understanding of the course material. WHMIS 2015 (GHS) online is presented in 6 modules. To progress from one module to the next, participants must pass a mandatory test. Those who do not pass the test must review the module content and re-test. Great to have a first aid kit - but How to use all the stuff?

Since the Introduction of the new and improved Occupational First Aid Level 2 and 3 courses in July 2018 and since August 2024 the introduction of the Intermediate and Advanced First Aid, a lot of wound care practice has been taken out of the program.

This 3-4 hour addition to the Intermediate and Advanced First Aid will be used to familiarize and practice with all dressing station tools. It will make every Intermediate and Advanced First Aid Attendant feel ready to treat a whole lot more minor injuries, and less patients will have to be referred to Medical Aid because of it.

Some of the Wounds we would practice are:

Subungual Hematoma or blood under the nail can easily be removed, we will go over how to assess and treat.

The Tubular gauze would be used to cover bigger wounds on a finger, like a deep cut or when you add a tongue depressor it could be used to splint a finger.

Steri strips

Steri strips and wound closures are used to close minor gaping wounds. Any wounds on the face should not be closed but referred to Medical Aid.

Frozen Toes - might not look too bad, but can be extremely painful, will go over assessing, how to proceed and how to bandage for transport to Medical Aid.

These are some of the fun things we will actually get to practice, if time permits, we will go over a lot more.
